Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Here we are at the end of another year. This year has gone very quickly!

It has been a year filled with many challenges and also beautiful things.

As nature sheds its leaves, resting and in preparation for a new beginning next year,

I hope that this coming year will be even better, and that we can each, in our own way, make the world a better place.

Thanking all of you who take the time to read this blog and wishing you a very good holiday season and new year.

Living Mountains, Jura, France

Mountains are made up of a myriad of living entities. It’s only reasonable that as a conglomerate they would appear to be living, almost breathing beings themselves. Every time you look at them, they appear slightly different.Sometimes the moon adorns their hillsides in the morning hours.Clouds appear to play with the trees, dipping down to touch them.They lay down gently covering them like a blanket.And in the evening, the cloud can look like it’s bubbling over the edge of the peaks……like a chemistry experiment with froth slipping over the edge of a beaker.Or maybe it’s like a duvet, covering all the mountain and its inhabitants softly and safely for the night.

Summer Clouds in the Geneva Valley

The cloud scenery in the Geneva valley is totally spectacular and ever-changing. Sometimes it looks like the clouds have exploded.On the way into Geneva I took this photograph from inside the bus.About an hour or two later I returned to find the cloud like this.Clouds like these can be seen bubbling on hot summer afternoons. They either develop into dramatic thunder and lightning rainstorms or evaporate in a quiet puff.The clouds seem to come over the Jura mountains in waves.Sometimes the cloud wave is big and seems completely continuous; it feels like it’s going to keep flowing until it has engulfed everything below it.At other times the clouds appear in discontinuous strips, popping over the mountains one by one.The most impressive funneling effect I’ve seen was looking out the window one evening recently to see this.

Drinking Butterfly

There are many varieties of butterfly in the Jura mountains – all manner of colors, patterns and sizes. I spent a while recently with one butterfly as it went from one flower to another.He (or she) moved purposefully dipping his proboscis to drink the nectar from the flowers.The wings moved constantly,……alternately folding and opening afterwards to display their full glory.This butterfly must have had a tousle because part of the wing was actually missing as you can see in this photo.All the same, he’s still amazingly beautiful.

It’s Christmas time! There’s snow on the mountains and it’s cold and frosty outside.It’s nice to be indoors, warm and dry with a pretty Christmas tree. This is our little tree – well, it’s not your usual Christmas tree, but our ficus tree agreed to have lights and tinsel put on his branches. And it makes for a lovely warm sight, with a bundle of prezzies underneath. Jazzy too likes to unwrap prezzies. Last night we all opened a present just to celebrate that Christmas is nearly here and start the festivities.We have also sampled one or two Christmas season goodies to get into the fun of things: almond cakes, Italian panettone, Spanish turron, almond with honey, persimmons and all sorts of special things.Wishing you a very lovely Christmas and that 2008 brings you many good things.

The Colors of Autumn

Colors in autumn can be vibrant.Or more subdued…The sunlight can be mellow and the air misty, slightly dulling the colors in the afternoon.Lake views can be dazzling, but the light has an almost metallic cool sheen.The pale cornflower blue contrasts nicely with the plowed beige fields.The hills are full of color.Looking more closely shows individual trees with more vibrant shades……and even more closely gives a good view of the deep brown of the bark, punctuating the yellow, orange and even slightly green of the leaves.The brightness of these grasses peeping up over the hedge defiantly challenging the autumn cool to touch them.The cows have come down from mountains and are lazing in the low afternoon sun.Most of the fields are plowed over in autumn; some still display vines with turned leaves.Brass-colored leaves frame the lake scene.Autumnal flower baskets adorn the towns.Wisps of autumn are apparent on the bushes.Bright cheery berries make up for the gentler sun.Acorns show their splendor…Sour sweet hard apples are ready for the eating…Individual leaves have their glory…Each one lighting up a single tree…Every tree adding to the brilliance and wonder of a rock-hewn valley. It seems like the colors of autumn are harvested from the abundance of the summer sun and served up to us just before the sleep of winter begins.
